Overheard at the End of Busy Day

Curious Girl is whining a bit about how it's not fair that the child lock on the car door prevents her from opening it when everyone else in the car can open their doors by themselves.

Politica: Curious Girl, I have no interest in listening to you whine anymore.

CG: Well, I guess you don't want to be my mom anymore, then.

oh, dear. politica has exactly the right approach. [you do have to giggle a little, behind scenes, at such drama from one of such tender years!]

Ah. "How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child!"

And this is so totally the kind of natural consequences comment that we say to her all.the.time. So she must be listening more closely than it would seem lately.

I have to admit, in the moment, I thought this was terrifically funny, although Politica took a while to see the funny. (although it's been the other way around plenty of times, too, with Politica trying not to laugh while I'm losing my patience. I'll be there again, I'm sure.)

My son just turned eight and I met his father when he was 3 and a half (step-son seems so...not the right term -- I use it in deference to his mother most of the time but otherwise just 'my son') and one of the hardest things to realize is just how much he has understood and processed, and for how long.

I remember watching some NBC news piece on children and how when interviewers asked them what bothered them most about their parents essentially said their parents didn't realize how savvy they were...

and they are aren't they?

Savvy.

And sassy.

We've been having arguments about child locks here too. Though they have not yet escalated to such heights, thankfully. Just think how great it is to have a child so quick-witted.

Over the years of listening to my kids, I've made the distinction between smarty-pants and sassy-slacks comments.

This time, CG's a sassy-slacks, I think!
