Just Checking

Maybe Curious Girl is reading Scrivener, or maybe existentialism is just common among adorable children of professors. Earlier today she asked "Mama, are we real or pretend?"

What did you answer? That's the real test for children of professors...

I said "yes, honey, we're really real." Then she followed up with a few more questions: are our kitties real? (also yes) are the dogs who live across the street real (yes again). I asked her how she felt about being real and not pretend, and she said "good."

Later, however, she wanted me to unplug the landline phone, "because I want it to be pretend. I don't want for real. Take out the plugger, Mama."

What lurks in the mind of a toddler...

Ella just asked me the same question today! First she asked if Wallace and Grommit were real, and then whether we are.

Welcome, Scrivener! Curious Girl was at it again today, asking if her bedtime water and my chair were real. She has also lately been occasionally distressed that TV characters won't talk to her (although if I talk for them she doesn't seem to mind the pretense).
