Sukkah 2

We had some new friends over on Sunday afternoon for a funky feminist Sukkah ceremony plus arts-and-crafts time for the kids (our friends' son is just one, so he wasn't much for the crafts, but Curious Girl and another neighbor had fun making paper chains--thanks to Phantom for inspiring that with her comment about LG's sukkah-decorating playdate). We adapted a ceremony at Ritualwell and we each drew pictures of strong women we wanted to welcome to our Sukkah and into our lives. We had Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, two grandmothers, Sylvia Pankhurst, , Miriam, the goddess Diana, our neighbor (mother of CG's visiting friend), Adrienne Rich, Muriel Rukeyser, and Marge Piercy all represented. We each talked briefly about what we admired about these women, and then we had to dash into the house because the rain started.

I so love that idea. I would add a link for Audre Lorde. And Joy Harjo. And Natalie Angier. And bell hooks. And Linda Hogan. And Susan Griffin. And Sandra Steingraber. And Ynestra King. And Carolyn Merchant. And Annette Kolodny. And Sue Monk Kidd. And ....

This is what happens to me at this kind of cool ritual. Suddenly, I'd be sitting out in the rain frantically adding more and more links to the chain.
